Bob
Smith has been writing songs and
performing live for over thirty years now.
Born in The Forest of Dean Gloucestershire
in 1961 in an obscure corner of the West Country of Great Britain.
Brought up in a musical family where his Dad (another Bob) played the
piano and accordion around the pubs and bars to supplement his wages
as a mechanic.
By 16 years old Bob had already
been playing the drums in a number of local bands with various school
mates but it was only when he strapped on a guitar at 17 that things
started happening.
Through a boyfriend of his sister, Bob got introduced to and subsequently
asked to play for, a fledgling punk rock band from Gloucester by the
name of Demob.
Bob saw a chance and went for it….Within a few months he had taken
over the role of lead singer and had also started to write with a ferocity
born from an absolutely intent determination that music was where his
future lay.
By now it was the early 1980s and after 2 well received singles as far
as Bob was concerned DEMOB had ran its course. Their second single penned
by Bob (under his nick name of ‘Miff’) ‘No
Room For You’ had sold reasonably well , enough so that
over the next 30 years it would be praised from both sides of the Atlantic
as some kind of (albeit late) punk anthem.
Meanwhile….
Bob’s next band was
‘The Rescue Express’ with which he played for most
of the next 15 years, through far too many line up changes to list but
always staying true to his ideal of what music should be about…Good
tunes with words that actually say something and that someone would
want to remember.
Time moved on yet again and
Bob formed a completely new band ‘Garrison Damn’
in the late autumn of 1996…With this outfit Bob started to fully
explore his country rock roots and song after song was rehearsed and
recorded…The band toured America rolling down through Tennessee,
Texas and Alabama but despite another U.S. stint in New York a year
later the band sadly folded in 2001
Since then Bob has stayed true,
writing songs and playing his solo show all over Great Britain and Europe.
This year will see a return to the United States and also many more
solo shows than any year that has gone before.
2008 will also see the release of his first true ‘solo’
album……………’This is the Story’……..
